I was listening to a sermon yesterday and I heard something I really needed to hear. It was about salvation. It is a passage that I have heard numerous times, but yesterday it hit me in a powerfully new way. Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God[.]"
Have you ever
questioned whether your faith in Jesus was good enough or strong enough
for salvation? This kind of thinking is making a Savior of your faith.
The passage says "by GRACE through faith". You are saved by the grace of
God. The pastor I listened to explained it this way. "Faith is like the
ancient aqueducts of Rome, the aqueducts were just a channel for the
water. It was not the aqueducts that nourished and gave life the people, but the
water." He further explained it by this story:
There was a
hunter from way up north. He was hunting but found a river between him
and his pursuit. Not knowing how to get across that hunter slung his gun
over his back and got down on his knees. He began to edge out onto the
river just creeping along the ice. He just kept creeping slowly and
carefully across. As we was nearing the middle of the river he heard a
noise up river. He looked and saw a logger with his wagon loaded down
with logs and his team of draft horses. That logger drove right on over
the ice and here was the hunter on his hands and knees just creeping
along. We are like that, here is mr. afriad and there is ms.
timid over there just creeping along. Over yonder is a Mr. Bold and Sure
driving on. Either way, whether timid or bold (weak or strong in the
faith) the ice (grace) holds the same. Thank God for putting that to
rest in my heart and Praise the Lord that it doesn't depend on my weak
faith but on the grace of God that I am saved!
